Can i put construction paper in my birds cages or nest box?

I want to put it in the nest box….because with just the white nest material its really hard to tell if there is eggs or not!
If you give the birds some tiny sticks and some grasses they will build a nest that is not white. I would not use construction paper as they may ingest some dye or other ingredients. Even white paper is dyed.
