Hi, I got my first parakeet just last month. (August 29) And I keep him in my room, so he can be away from my dog. I always have to keep the door shut unless I am in the room. This morning, (Saturday) I’m not sure how, but the door was open, (I KNOW I closed it last night, maybe it was my mom coming to see if I was awake?) and my dog came inside. (She’s not that big, 15 pounds) I was still sleeping, and I’m a pretty heavy sleeper. All of a sudden, I hear very very loud and violent flapping of Coconut’s wings (The parakeet) and I shot out of bed (as I said before, I’m a heavy sleeper, so the fight was pretty bad for it to wake me up) and ran to Coconut’s cage to find my dog attacking the bird. Well, not the bird, but certainly the cage! The cage door was shut, but my dog was tipping the cage violently, and I arrived just in time to save it from crashing down on my floor. Now of course I was stunned, but not as bad as my poor bird. (I’ll get to that later) Anyway, there was water in his dish, and the entire thing had emptied onto my carpet and mostly on the bottom of his cage, soaking the newspaper. I got my dog out of the room obviously, then I got a towel and was about to wipe down the soaked bars of the cage, but as soon as I put my hand in the cage Coconut went crazy and started spazzing out, obviously he was scared out of his mind of my hand. So I let the cage air dry…

Previously, I was able to get coconut to eat millet out of my hand (Sometimes….) and he was perfectly fine when I put my hand in the cage as long as I didn’t get to close. I haven’t been able to do the step up command yet. I always read to him, talked to him, just spent time with him. Sometimes I would just leave my hand hanging there in his cage while reading to him, so he would know my hand is not going to harm him. Now, as soon as I just walk into the room he starts getting really scared. It’s not like I attacked him, but guess I understand he is scared of anything now. When I leave the room I put on some soothing music. I Checked to make sure he was okay after the incident, and he seemed to have no damage, though the beak did have this speck of white on it, but I think it was just seed or something. The only other thing was after it happened he was breathing very heavily, because he was flying around like crazy he was very tired, and was, well, soaking wet, drenched. Now he is dry, and not breathing heavily, but completely scared OUT OF HIS MIND. Before this happened, whenever my dog heard Coconut chirping from upstairs, she would run up to my bedroom door and scratch on the door trying to get in. So I picked her up and held her up to the cage so she could get the curiosity out of her system. That seemed to work, Now she doesn’t care when she hears him chirping because she knows what it is. However, that’s only chirping. She’s not just curious about the sound, but the movement. When she sees him move, she FLIPS OUT. I have always held her so she wouldn’t harm him. I also started training her to sit nicely next to the cage or on my bed or something. Whenever she stayed still and didn’t lunge for the cage, I’d give her a treat. That worked whenever I was with her, she sat still and got treats. But this morning was terrible. I don’t know HOW I’ll ever gain Coconut’s trust again. I’m really sad, Coconut’s really sad, and I don’t know what I am supposed to do. Please help me.
Thanks, the last two answers were the best to me. But I think I’m going to chose the second to last because the last one was telling me what to do if my bird was scared only right after the accident, but I meant he was scared this whole time, even now. Kinda like a birds food dish.

My flock of 10 budgies. They have their own bird-safe room, and their cages stay open for about 10 hours each day. Their cages are connected, so that when the tops are closed they can go between the 2 cages. Otherwise they have free flight in the room, and spend much of their time playing on their hanging play area and also their stationary playgym area on top of the bookcase. I think they are pretty happy, what do you think?

I have two parakeets in a flight cage that is 36in long 18in wide and 20in high. I like the cage but am looking for a way to arrange the perches and cups and toys that will make it more spacious and better in general.
Here is what I have to put in it right now: five little food cups, the two that go with the cage, and a ramakin that goes on the bottom. A natural branch perch, rope perch, sand swing perch, wooden dowel, and little mirror perch w/ treat cup. As far as toys I can make some but I have like three hanging ones and one that goes in the side of the cage and another on the cage floor. I want to put this little ladder in too since they love ladders but what should I take out move around etc?

Basically where to arrange perches and toys and food cups?

This is Dusty’s cage. He is playing hanging upside down being silly and dancing to his mp3 player. He says “want some food” and “comere Dust.”

For and Dance i am doing a trio to the song "cant be tamed" by miley cyrus and we want a bird cage that we can fit in and that is sturdy enough to hold us (hang on) is there any place we could buy one or what could we use to make one? it should be about 5 1/4 to 6 feet tall and pretty wide
