for parakeets, i’ve never seen one in a wooden/built cage. you can look on craigslist.com, you’ll probably find a few cages for free/low cost. maybe a yardsale or thrift store even.

Well, if it is to save money, I would look at craigslist.com in your area to find a cheap or even FREE one! Building a cage, a good cage, can be spendy and very complicated.
But, my best advice would be to look around on the net and find a building plan that suits your needs. Also, at home depot, or some similar store, they have material to fix the screens in your windows or screen doors. It is soft and breathable and easy to clean and durable! Chicken wire is good for bigger birds, but with smaller birds such as parakeets their nails can get stuck in it!! So be careful!

Make sure you use proper material as a paint coated material could be fatal. Make sure the metal is not toxic. Make sure you follow the directions precisely and do not take shortcuts. If you do use woods; make sure they are not treated as this could be toxic.
Some pet stores have scratch and dent sales and the sale of last years models. This may be an option.
Just be careful that you have good quality, safe product that you are working with. Take into consideration the environment if the cage is to be an outside aviary or outdoor access.

You can purchase a metal one at your local pet store for $19.99 it holds up to two parakeets. If you have more than that you will have to upgrade the size of the cage and of course the price will go up.
