Rats in bird cages?

Can my rats chew through the hard but brittle plastic that the bottoms of bird cages are typically made of? They’ve chewed through the softer plastic tray of a ferret cage before.

Generally speaking a rat can be kept in a bird cage, I’ve done it many times and I find they like the added height and climbing room. But if your rats have already developed a chewing habit, they can work their way through a bird cage bottom just as easily as a ferret cage.
I would suggest an aquariam with a mesh top or one of the cages designed with the wire mesh sitting inside the plastic bottom on the floor, so the animal can’t get an edge to chew (these are usually marketed for chinchillas and tend to be expensive).
If you want to give the bird cage a try then I would suggest giving your rats plenty of toys to chew on (hamster gnawing blocks are great) as well, give them lots of climbing structures to keep them busy, hammocks made out of towels, plastic and wooden toys, etc. (be careful with wood, make sure its nontoxic).

probably so because if they did it once they can do it again!!

YES! Rats can chew through just about anything short of stainless steel and glass . don’t use the bird cage .

Rats can chew through almost anything/everything. I have had exceptional luck with rubbermaid containers. I usually remove the top and put a heavy duty screen with weights to secure them. I have kept rats in these for a long time, the only bad thing about them is that they don’t get good circulation, try keeping a fan blowing in their direction.
