What bird cage should I get?
Hello, I am pretty set on a new larger cage I am getting for my lovebirds, but I wanted to see what insight I could get. Never hurts — I really like this tall cage, that is about three feet wide, and about four feet tall. There is another cage this exotic bird store owner is pushing, that is about three feet by three feet, and he says it’s better since lovebirds stay high anyway, and it comes with a stand that makes it a tad higher than the other one (which I can still put on something else ot make it higher. With the stand, both are about 0. There are other option salso — one is a sturdier three by three foot cage with a stand and looks real nice and is the same price (but it does have a BIG door and I dont want to clip my birds’ wings). And at Petsmart htey have these larger cages in now that are about two feet wide by two to three feet tall — I dont like the width on them, though they look large compared to usual cages there. What do you guys have for lovebirds?
thanks!
And before you lecture me on getting two lovebirds, they are adopted birds who had no other home, and they love each other. They also have been playing with me, and are slowly getting used to me so I am not interested in the opinion that I should just have one bird, I think they are happy having a companion and a human friend and I take very good care of them. If I don’t give them attention they cry out for me and get excited when I come over. They are NOT decorations to me simply because I have two, and they are not uncared for just because I don’t force them to love only me. OK, I am sure people will still say I did something wrong, but my pets are all very loved. Their current cage, which I just got them in when I adopted them two weeks ago, is only two by two feet so I just need a better home for them, for more toys and so they can move their wings. I do plan on letting them out to fly a little in a safetly enclosed room.
Hari: ‘Take’ a decision?
Thanks Rhiannan: Three feet seems as big as I can find.. is that OK. I can keep looking for four feet if it’s out there. Unlike terrariums, you can’t really turn birdcages over, and they all seem skinny and tall … thanks!!
The Bird Room
Some video of my fids hanging out in the bird room. I was happy to see the Nanday starting to play and forage. We adopted her (and 6 others in the video) from The Gabriel Foundation, and for the first 6 months, all she seemed to do was just sit on her perch. Now she explores, plays, and tears things up! Stinker (Gold Capped) is still demonstrating perseverative-type behaviors (rocking, yelling), but with time this will change. Our concept for the bird room is that it really functions as one big cage, where everyone is free to come and go from their cages where they have food, water, more toys, and hiding places for naps. For safety issues, some may have restricted access to the larger bird room when we are not home to supervise. Both the Cherry Head and one of the Gold Capped conures are physically handicapped, but they do just fine. Everyone’s vocal chords are intact! Life with Aratingas!

What is the best bird for a 2nd time bird owner?
Hi. I have a Sun Conure currently and I adore him
. He is PACKED with curiosity and playfullness. He makes kissing sounds and kisses us. He also does some crazy things. He is pretty loud when he wants me to go and take him out of his cage in the morning. I want to try another breed of bird because they are the best
. I will still spend a lot of time with my sun conure, but also time with the new bird. And gradually introduce them to each other so they can become friends
. Can you suggest to me some nice and sweet types of bird? Could I make a home made cage out of stainless steel for the new bird? I have looked at eclectus parrots, and they seem to make amazing pets, do you think I have enough experience with birds to get one? I hand fed my conure for a month or two, so I have experience in that area. I would most likely get a bird that is not fully weaned and hand feed the bird. At the moment I am looking at Goffin cockatoos, and eclectus parrots. Can you suggest some more birds for a 2nd time bird owner? Thanks ![]()
