What is the initial cost of buying a small bird?
I’ve been doing a lot of research and have decided that a cockatiel is the right bird for me. What is the initial cost of the bird/cage/toys/food, etc?
Would this be crowded in his cage?
I am getting a cockatiel, and planning on this cage for him: http://birdcages4less.com/page/B/PROD/Small_Bird_Cages/PA5706
Do you think it would be crowded with all this in it?
One pedi perch, one manzanita branch, on rope perch, one small swing with spinner, one tent, and some hanging bell and shredable toys.
Ideas for a better way to arrange the stuff in my bird cage?
I have two parakeets in a flight cage that is 36in long 18in wide and 20in high. I like the cage but am looking for a way to arrange the perches and cups and toys that will make it more spacious and better in general.
Here is what I have to put in it right now: five little food cups, the two that go with the cage, and a ramakin that goes on the bottom. A natural branch perch, rope perch, sand swing perch, wooden dowel, and little mirror perch w/ treat cup. As far as toys I can make some but I have like three hanging ones and one that goes in the side of the cage and another on the cage floor. I want to put this little ladder in too since they love ladders but what should I take out move around etc?
Basically where to arrange perches and toys and food cups?
Which bird cage should I get?
My bird, Zeller, needs a buddy, so I have decided to got to PetSmart to get another parakeet, then to Pet Co. for a cage (they have a better cage selection). Zeller has an average sized cage (not big enough for 2 birds). To save money, could I purchase a new bigger cage (maybe this? http://www.petco.com/product/112008/Prevue-Hendryx-Large-Black-Flight-Bird-Cage.aspx#BVRRWidgetID ) , put the new bird in this for the "quarintine period", and once the birds are ready to be put together, wash the cage down really well and move around perches and toys (I have heard that this makes the cage neutral territory), then put both birds in the big cage instead of buying another small cage for quarintine and a big cage for both of the birds. Also, please give me other cage reccomendations. Thanks!:)

What do you Need to Know BEFORE Your Pet Bird Escapes to the Outdoors? Any Additions?!?

Level 1
So here it is- Your knowledge and my experience
IMPORTANT to do – As Soon as Possible.
– Have two cages available (even if one is a smaller cage to put into the larger cage so you can leave the door open for catching the escapee)
- Leave all Lights ON – It Will be attracted to the light and more likely stay close and come down if it can see You , its Food, Cage and its Bird Friend – if you have one.
. -Objects of famaliarty – Cage, its toys, feeding bowls etc.. (We have a coupe of the large wired Colorful ropes -that they perch on in there favorite spot) I should have had one here. Could have hung it on the deck near the tree to come as a seconday thing to land on.
-Maybe a recording of My Birds (boo couldn t keep calling out all the time – when needed) When Elfvie was nearby – he reacted immediatly to his Boo call.
-For chance of longer survival to keep trying-I needed
to get it food. I going to get a regular small outdoor
birdfeeder (inside) so that they would be use to going
to one. I could have put it outside to lure it..
And if it would have ended up outside our area –many people have birdfeeders-and therefore more chance of someone else catching it
.
-And that leads to Last – but not Least- Contacting the local animal shelter (SPCA is a major one) would be at the top of my list if I found any kind of Pet Animal – to check to see if someone reported it missing. And any number of other ways – post Lost Posters in the Area, Advertise in Papers-Local TV Stations and Radio to get the word out.
Thank you so much to those who responded -I hope that you know that it helped me out constructively and emotionally and will help Me and Others to be better Prepared in the Future.
.. My Story: My Birdies hardly EVER (a couple of times) come down from the top floor of this cottage- to the second floor. The few times they did come down is when I didn t freshen their food. Because I had just freshend their food 10 minutes before and they were upstairs at the time -And with me watching when I did open the door to the deck on the second floor – I AUSUMED it wouldn t happen. They didn t follow their normal habits and it DID happen-he came down and out in a flash. ..
It happened on Saturday afternoon -When Alfie flew out the door I went in and got the other bird (Boo) in the cage and brought it outside on the deck under the tree it was in. (The problem is-even if he came down-I wouldn have had a way to catch him without a second cage) It was probably distracted by the other birds (even was following a finch going from branch to branch) and Boo would call sometime- but not often enough and then stopped calling out. It stayed for about 20 minutes then at one point flew and into the tallest pine tree ever. I followed it calling and later it flew back towards our direction but overflew again way over to the other side. By this time it was getting windy and I placed the other bird again on the deck and it started calling and Alfie would respond back and this is when Alfie flew to the tree closer to Boo. The wind was heavy so when Alfie looked like he was going to fly down he but ended up way on the otherside again. But it was now dark. I went to see if I could find him again but didn t find him until I went out again the next morning (6:00am). It did start raining. I went out a million times a day with constant calling. It seems as if this might of helped to keep him in the area. One time later in the day Boo was calling again and Alfie answered and came closer into a tree across the street and at one point flew across towards us -but it was getting dark again and a car went by and he flew off again. That was at the end of the 2nd evening. After one cooler evening and a full day of rain – continuing on into another night- even though there was a rain free and warmer day ahead…… I could not locate him the next day-unlike all the times I had before.
Today I had to let Boo do what he is use to and fly free within the space. Now it is chattering away. And only one friend left here to listen and respond to it. I will stay til the end of the week- just in case………

How to go about cleaning a bird cage?
It was outside for a while and I already hosed it down and let it dry on the patio. The dishes are nasty and the toys that were left inside were extremely rusty. How should I disinfect this cage? I want to use it when I get my second bird to tame him separately.
What is a safe way to clean it without dangerous cleaning liquids?
I can’t save the dishes. The cage was left in the last owner’s backyard for a few weeks and the sun ruined the plastic.
Expense of owning a bird?
I’m low income but manage and prioritize my money very well.
I know a macaw is out as well as most larger birds.
I was thinking possibly a tiel but now I’m thinking maybe a green cheek conure or some other smaller bird.
I just want to be able to take good care of any bird, any pet.
Any ideas?
What about some of the very low cost big birds with cages that I see sometimes in my local bargain sheet? If cage is large enough would that be an idea or not?
What does it cost to feed and provide toys to one large bird each month?
I do have a credit card for medical care but would only use it for vet expenses and would never charge a bird or regular items, it’s for back up only for vet.
I need to know how to design my bird cage!?
I’m getting an adult white ringneck dove soon. I really need to know how to make her cage look. She can’t fly very well (I’ve met her before). Can I get a picture or a decription on how to do it? It will be just one dove in this cage and everywhere i look it talks about several doves in one cage. Does she need a nest available at all times or toys hanging from the top?

What bird cage should I get?
Hello, I am pretty set on a new larger cage I am getting for my lovebirds, but I wanted to see what insight I could get. Never hurts — I really like this tall cage, that is about three feet wide, and about four feet tall. There is another cage this exotic bird store owner is pushing, that is about three feet by three feet, and he says it’s better since lovebirds stay high anyway, and it comes with a stand that makes it a tad higher than the other one (which I can still put on something else ot make it higher. With the stand, both are about 0. There are other option salso — one is a sturdier three by three foot cage with a stand and looks real nice and is the same price (but it does have a BIG door and I dont want to clip my birds’ wings). And at Petsmart htey have these larger cages in now that are about two feet wide by two to three feet tall — I dont like the width on them, though they look large compared to usual cages there. What do you guys have for lovebirds?
thanks!
And before you lecture me on getting two lovebirds, they are adopted birds who had no other home, and they love each other. They also have been playing with me, and are slowly getting used to me so I am not interested in the opinion that I should just have one bird, I think they are happy having a companion and a human friend and I take very good care of them. If I don’t give them attention they cry out for me and get excited when I come over. They are NOT decorations to me simply because I have two, and they are not uncared for just because I don’t force them to love only me. OK, I am sure people will still say I did something wrong, but my pets are all very loved. Their current cage, which I just got them in when I adopted them two weeks ago, is only two by two feet so I just need a better home for them, for more toys and so they can move their wings. I do plan on letting them out to fly a little in a safetly enclosed room.
Hari: ‘Take’ a decision?
Thanks Rhiannan: Three feet seems as big as I can find.. is that OK. I can keep looking for four feet if it’s out there. Unlike terrariums, you can’t really turn birdcages over, and they all seem skinny and tall … thanks!!

How are the Bird products and cages at Doctors Foster and Smith online store?
It looks like they have pretty good cages, perches and toys.
But do you think its good quality and healthy for a parrot?

Where can I get good bird cages from?
I need to get a big cage for a Green Winged Macaw. It needs to be at least 4′x3′x6′. I want a little bigger for toys and all that stuff tho. Any websites, or stores would be great. Thanks.
