Tainan Taiwan ‘Wet’ Market – Live Squid changing colors

Taiwan Day Market. A not-to-be-missed Taiwan phenomenon, the same goes for Taiwanese Night Markets, a completely different experience. Several acres under one roof or sometimes outdoors. This particular Tainan market is known as a ‘wet’ market because the concrete floor is forever wet from all the seafood and meat vendors washing down their tables and stahls and from all the melting ice. Every type of seafood and meat you can imagine….and some you didn’t want to. Prepared and unprepared foods galore. A highlight of any trip to Taiwan. You’ll add pounds of weight just walking through one of these. It’s all served fresh, most of the seafood is still alive, prepared chicken as well as live chickens that you select from their cage (a sad reality we never see in the states). The unlucky bird is quickly dispatched, scallded in hot water to losen the feathers and placed in the magic chicken plucking machine, actually a stainless steel dryer with rubber dowels sticking inward. The chicken tumbles around inside bing-bing-bong-bing and comes out naked, free of feathers. You know you have fresh chicken when it’s still warm! cringe
