Will freezing my bird seed kill the meal moths? How long to freeze it?

The infestation of moths (1/4 inch long fluttery things) began about 4 weeks ago and steadily has increased. I believe it was in the 3 bags of various bird seeds that were near the large bird cage. How long does the seed need to be frozen to kill all stages of the moth/caterpillar/eggs?

Will it even work?
Thanks

I thought you had to freeze it to prevent it. I think once infested it’s trash! I wouldn’t feed my animal larvae. That’s just gross.

I had it happen to rice once. I threw that out & cleaned everything & froze what I could that wasn’t infested to prevent it.

The larva will die after three months in fridge but eggs will survive.

I had a similar problem with borers in some hickory I want to use in my smoker. I baked the wood in an oven set at 225º F for about 40 minutes. It worked. I would imagine bird seed should take less time.

Freezing does work…..just keep it in the freezer and use it from there. Freezing also works for dry pet foods to get rid of moths, etc.

The eggs will survive the freezing you may need to get rid of the feed.
